Pylant is a humanistic, sans-serif typeface with high contrast and slanted stems. Its larger x-height and closed apertures give it a modern and sophisticated look. Pylant also includes serif-like terminals as a stylistic choice. The typeface’s unique features are its angles, crisp lines, and roundness.
Project Goal: Design a custom typeface through informed research and type studies

Process Work
For the typeface study, I learned the dimensional properties of type through sketching and iteration to then create my custom type.

During the type analysis, Optima, specifically the semi-bold style, became my primary reference for Pylant. While Optima and Pylant share some similarities, Pylant has its unique features. One of Pylant’s most distinctive characteristics is its slanted stem, which I added during the refinement period as an experimental design element. I additionally chose to include roundness to the crotches, junctions, and stems, which decidedly added character to the typeface.
