Bringing landmarks to life for study abroad students
Q: How can AR tools enhance college students’ experiences while studying abroad?
Project Overview
As part of Team Digital Storytelling, our assignment was to develop an interactive experience using an augmented reality platform. We were granted full autonomy in content and design choices. I assumed the role of graphic designer, contributing to the branding and leading the AR experience creation. Collectively, we introduced ARound the World, an AR tool that brings landmarks to life for study-abroad students.
Research
Our team’s research revealed that 87% of study abroad students rely on Google for information, often taking them out of the physical location and potentially missing valuable experiences while sightseeing. Determined to address this issue, we aimed to create a solution that kept students engaged onsite.
Brand Identity
We began by crafting a brand identity, selecting colors based on travel associations, and choosing typography that appeals to college-age students while conveying the sophistication associated with travel.
Augmented Reality
But how does it work? Adobe Aero served as our Augmented Reality platform, enabling us to seamlessly integrate digital media into real-world environments.
Deliverables
To provide a scalable example, we focused on our “Pisa Experience” and created a unique, site-specific postcard featuring QR codes that unlocked their personalized abroad adventure.
For our AR experience, we developed interactive features such as clickable icons, quizzes, and photo opportunities. These elements were designed in a sequential experience within Aero, and tested to optimize utility for students.
Additionally, we developed a cohesive brand identity encompassing one-pagers, web content, social media assets, and print materials.
Our AR experience not only bridges the gap between digital and physical learning but also enriches students’ cultural immersion while studying abroad. ARound the World stands as a testament to innovation in educational technology, offering a dynamic tool for enhancing travel experiences.
